It all started with our three Great Danes.
Whenever they were outside with us, they’d sneak a few bites of grass here and there. But it wasn’t long before they’d come back inside and—yep—vomit it up. After cleaning up more messes than we cared to admit, we started researching why dogs eat grass in the first place and whether there was a better, safer option.
That led us to wheatgrass, barley, and oat grass—three varieties that not only satisfied our pups’ instinct to graze, but also came with some impressive health benefits. We started growing it ourselves from organic seed purchased from True Leaf Market (we’re not certified organic, but our seed is). Eventually, we sowed a dedicated patch right in the backyard just for them.
And it worked. No more throw-up clean-ups. Just happy, healthy dogs enjoying a purposeful treat.
A Hit With More Than Just Dogs
As word spread, we started sharing with friends, family, and neighbors. Pretty soon, we had cat owners, bunny lovers, and fellow dog parents asking where they could get some. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we knew we were onto something.
Today, we’re proud to offer freshly grown Pet Grass trays for sale at Pet Paradise in Willoughby. And after several requests for grow-it-yourself options, we launched our Grow at Home Pet Grass Kits—a fun, simple way for pet owners to provide fresh grass from their own kitchen windowsill. Our son Eli even got to show how easy it is live on New Day Cleveland. Watch our segment here
What’s in Our Pet Grass Blend?
- Wheatgrass – Often called a “green superfood,” wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyll, which may help detoxify the body and support a healthy pH balance. It’s packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as iron, magnesium, and amino acids. For pets, wheatgrass may promote healthier digestion, support the immune system, and even freshen breath. Cats and dogs are instinctively drawn to it for good reason—it helps them feel better, naturally. (Medical News Today)
- Barley Grass – Barley grass is a gentle digestive aid known for its high fiber content, which may help regulate bowel movements and support gut health. It also contains powerful antioxidants and essential nutrients like calcium, iron, and B vitamins, which can support energy metabolism and promote a shiny coat and healthy skin. Barley grass is especially helpful for dogs experiencing occasional digestive discomfort. (Canine Nutritionist)
- Oat Grass – Known for its calming properties, oat grass is particularly popular with cats. It’s rich in minerals like manganese, zinc, and selenium, and offers a smooth texture that’s easy on sensitive stomachs. Oat grass may help reduce hairballs in cats, soothe digestion in dogs and bunnies, and provide a safe outlet for natural chewing instincts. It’s a favorite for pets who tend to graze regularly. How Much Pet Grass Should a Cat or Dog Eat?
- Cats – A few bites or 1–2 inches per sitting is usually enough. Grass may help with hairballs and digestion or fill minor nutritional gaps. (VCA Animal Hospitals)
- Dogs – Larger dogs may nibble a few blades, while smaller breeds need even less. Dogs often self-regulate, but moderation is key.
What Happens If They Eat Too Much?
While pet grass is healthy in small amounts, overdoing it can cause:
- Mild digestive upset – Too much can lead to vomiting or loose stools.
- Gagging – Long blades can cause irritation or choking if swallowed too fast.
- Blockages (rare) – Large quantities of fibrous grass could cause internal blockages, though this is uncommon.
How to Offer Pet Grass Safely
- Start with small amounts and monitor your pet’s reaction
- Trim long blades to 1–2 inches
- Offer occasionally, as a treat or digestive aid—not a meal replacement
